Cien Anos #4

In this part of the novel I have found some interesting comparisons between the characters and solitude.  Throughout the novel each character has exhibited some form of solitude, although the character Meme is quite different.  She is the product of a newer generation and the accompanying changes that occurred to the city hence she is one of the characters that does not experience much solitude.  This is may be because of the modernity that occurred in the city so she has been able to be loud, outgoing, and talkative compared to her ancestors.  There are many examples in the novel which show this, and there is one part in the novel where she says that she practices the clavichord even though it is a daily sacrifice but it would keep her mother clam so she does it.  This part stood out to me because the author used the word sacrifice, which implies some sort of forced solitude.

Meme is definitely an interesting character. I do have trouble fitting her in with the rest of the family, and yet she certainly shares many of the same characteristics. She does sleep with her nephew… is it? I believe he’s a nephew in the end anyways…
and keeping a tie around her husband’s neck seems rather strange. she may not have seen him as an equal, and so she was alone in that sense anyways. And I agree, the sacrifice of playing her old clavicord does seem like a sort of solitude.

    oh no.
i think i have mixed up characters in my head. i believe i was thinking of amaranta ursula… hmmmm
surprise surprise, is this not what the book is all about, that time repeats itself, and everything works in a circle…. all of these characters seem to be one and the same? haha

hmm, Fernando mentioned something similar to your comment. He commented that the new generations that appeared later on in the book were more expressive, like meme. Kind of what you are stating as well. I didn’t notice this until it was mentioned, but now it seems so obvious. Meme definitley was more gregarious and free-spirited than the other characters, though she did sacrifice, not only by playing the harpsicord for her mother’s sake but also, she paid dearly for falling in love with mauricio babeloinia. Almost as if she were punished for being so care-free and falling in love.
